Descendants of Hubert (Germany)

 

According to a French "Dictionary of Names and Surnames", HUBER, HUBERT and HUBERTY would be altered forms of the old Germanic HUGUBERT, which first appeared in the 7th Century. It would have been "shortened" first to HUCBERT and the to HUBERT as early as the 8th century.

In another work on names/surnames, also from France, one read that HUBERT is of German origin and would have been a contraction of HUG, meaning "intelligent" and BERTH" meaning "shining". The book, "Names and Surnames of France", adds that the one who "popularized" the name was Saint Hubert, bishop of Maastricht during the 8th century (saint Hubert of the patron-saint of hunters, because of a legend that once, as he was hunting, he saw a cross appear on the head of a dear he was about to kill.)

Yet another book, "Origin of French-Canadian Families", says that HUBERT comes from 2 German words, HOWE and BERT, which would mean, “shining complexion”.
