Welcome you to

       Fore Gardens

Located on approximately a ˝ acre track of land in the Town of Farmville and Cumberland County,  the Fore’s have lovingly planted and cared for their yard and gardens for over 14 years.

It is their pleasure to share with everyone some of their successes and joys.

The brick rancher was built in the 1960s but, like the yard and gardens,

the home has also undergone extensive remodeling in the past years.

Food for eating, freezing and Canning

The Garden in the spring is always lovely.  Here, in the back, you can see crops of sugar snap peas on the left and right with multiplier onions and garlic to the center.  Green beans are doing well in the front right.

Here is the gardener hard at work early in the spring.  February 4th is his favorite time to plant the pea crop.

You can see the sweet corn standing up like little soldiers to his right.

Companion planting

Companion planting is the practice of planting crops together or close to one another in a way that combines crops for mutually beneficial effects.  We are only just starting to practice this and only have a few pictures.

Flowers for the beauty of it all

This view shows the red, white and blue flower garden that cleverly disguises a dog run.  But, if you look closely you can see Jack peeking at you from between the trees.

A 30’x10’ deck was built onto the back of the house.  This corner shows the fennel in the foreground in bloom.  The center of the picture displays a hummingbird feeder on a shepherd’s hook surrounded by tall phlox.

A water feature on the property adds a calming and fun aspect with the sound of water and movement.

Installation of a rain garden plus the use of 2 rain barrels help the property be more environmentally friendly.

Capturing water runoff from the road and yard the rain garden slows the flow preventing erosion.  The water is held on the soil and as it flows out it received filtering and is more likely to return to the local water table.

The project was funded by the sale of Chesapeake Bay license plates from the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund with technical assistance provided
by the Piedmont Soil & Water Conservation District and installation by the Heart of Virginia Master Gardeners.

To control erosion from the new construction matting was placed over the sown grass seed.  Later it would either deteriorate or be pulled up to allow the grass to grow and be mown.  Notice the ramp on the upper end designed to drive the lawn mower up.

Fore Gardens is watched over by the fore’s devoted dog, Dot, who is a faithful companion and gentle master.
